Communication made simple

Keeping it simple is the single most important aspect of effective communication.

Simplicity is... not so simple.

In fact, it can be a lot harder than complexity. Just ask Mohit Rawat, Vice President of Novartis. In our kickoff podcast episode, Why is Simple Hard?, Mohit shares his favorite formulas for crafting impactful business presentations that connect with the hearts and minds of audience members. In fact, he declares that keeping it simple is the single most important aspect of effective communication. Here are two of Mohit’s top recommendations for simple communication.

Focus on connection

Less is always more so don’t get too lost in the details. Chances are, your audience won’t remember more than two or three takeaways from your presentation. And that’s okay. People may not remember the details, but they’ll always remember how you made them feel. This is the code for winning the hearts and minds of your audience. Communication is about connection. Striking an impactful attachment that inspires the audience to recall the experience positively is far more effective in achieving your desired result.

Keep your story relatable

Capture attention right away through relatable stories that connect with the audience. Explore why the information is important, how it’s relevant, and what they should do next. Closing your story with a clear call to action is critical for clarifying what people need to do. Reinforce this thoroughly to inspire an effective sense of urgency that motivates them to act right away.

Make communication a top priority

Investment of time and effort is the only way to achieve effective communication. Think about the goals you’re trying to achieve and map the journey from where you are to where you want to be. And remember—the more you put in, the more you’ll get out. Translate your vision into reality by observing and learning from other great communicators. The key to success is to never stop being a student. Your investment in yourself will rarely cause you to regress and will continue to pay off with more dividends in the future.
