Visual Hierarchy: “Secrets of Smart Prezenters”

Discover some of the secrets to becoming great presenters and how you can optimize user experience to your advantage!

Presentations are used around the world to communicate important information about various different topics. From a literal sense, they consist of a set of slides with textual and visual elements that are intended to gauge the attention of the audience. However, a truly remarkable presentation goes beyond that of just a slideshow; it is an art form that integrates a diverse design pallet, optimizes user experience (UX) preferences, and alludes to different psychological insights.  In this blog post, we will discuss some of the secrets of smart presenters, and how they convey thought-provoking and memorable presentations through the use of these three disciplines.

1. Designing Captivating Visuals

Visual design plays a crucial role in captivating the attention of your audience. "Design creates culture, culture shapes values, and values determine the future," says Robert L. Peters, a renowned graphics designer. Through the use of vivid illustrations and depictions in your presentation, you will be able to more effectively convey your overarching message. Here are some things you can try and implement to win over a crowd.

Simplicity - When creating a presentation, practicing minimalism can often aid in reducing unnecessary clutter. Keeping a focus on key messages and conveying them in a concise and clear manner helps establish balance.

Typography - Choosing fonts that are legible, content-related, and aesthetically pleasing, will incentivize both your audience to pay closer attention and help you organize important points while you present.

Color Palette - Use a color scheme that is closely associated with your brand. Being consciously aware of color psychology will help you evoke desired emotions from your audience and leverage it to your benefit.

Imagery and Graphics - Use relevant and high quality images to strengthen the delivery of your content material.

2. Cultivating a Positive User Experience (UX)

UX considerations go beyond that of just digital interfaces. They exist in presentations as well. Evan Williams, co-founder of Twitter, says "user experience is everything. It always has been, but it's still undervalued and underinvested in." By maintaining a focus around user interaction, you can ensure an engaging experience for audience members.

Information Hierarchy - Structure your content in a way in which it follows an order based on importance (i.e. headings, subheadings, and bullet points). This way, the audience is able to navigate independently through the information.

Consistency - Maintain uniformity among all design elements in your presentation.  Throughout the course of your presentation, be consistent with font choice, color scheme, and other visual elements.

Interaction - Having elements in your presentation that are interactive encourage your audience to play a part in your delivery of the message. Some such elements could be clickable prototypes, or videos, or demonstrations. Through participating, and meaningful interactions, you are able to keep them engaged.

Accessibility -  Do NOT have elements in your presentation that are NOT accessible to everyone in your audience. Whether it has to do with contrast, font size, or alternative text, it must be presented in a medium where anybody is able to understand.

3. Leveraging Psychological Insights

Being familiar with the psychological factors that affect and influence human behavior can aid in significantly enhancing the impact of your presentation. “The power of persuasion lies in understanding the psychology of your audience. Tailor your message to their needs, desires, and emotions," says Carmine Gallo, a Communication Expert. It can also help you pivot and make adjustments to garner the attention of specific members of the audience as you deliver your message.

Storytelling - Come up with a creative narrative that plays on your audience’s personal experiences and emotional state of being. This plays a major part in grabbing your audience’s attention and also helps build a sense of togetherness and empathy while conveying your content.

Cognitive Load - Be wary of how much information you are unloading on your audience within a given time frame. When presenting more complex information, simplify the content through how you speak, and lean on visual aid to help illustrate these explanations. Summaries and brief takeaways can also help in stringing multiple points of information together.

Social Proof - Incorporating testimonials and citing evidence from case studies/statistics can assist in bringing about more professionalism and making your presentation credible.

Call to Action - If you are speaking on behalf of a cause or have a desired outcome, explicitly state it with a call to action. Using persuasive dialogue pertaining to timeliness (i.e. urgency, scarcity, or loss of aversion), you can evoke an emotional response from your audience and get members to take a stand.

To summarize:

The combination of unique design models, positive user experiences, and psychological insights can turn what appears to be a simple slideshow into a compelling, impactful, piece of art. Through the use of diverse visual depictions, and a harmonious blend of color and content delivery, you can elevate your presentations and leave a positive impression on those listening. Having a deep understanding of the landscape of human psychology will further enhance the way in which you convey your message, and moreover how it is received. Now, take these secrets of presenters and realize your true potential in the field of communication. It is time to TRULY reach YOUR audience!
